Known also as Lalla Ded, she gave Kashmir and the world her immortal Vakhs, which have since remained ever-fresh, and full of spiritual fervour Lalla's Vakhs are recited by thousands of Kashmiris with all devotion even now, the age of science and technology. Mathra Devi (1878–1985) was a revered Kashmiri saint-mystic, regarded as a spiritual successor to Lalleshwari (Lalla Ded). Born in Verinag to a Kashmiri Pandit family, she lost her husband at a young age and dedicated her life to intense sadhana and tapasya. Guided by her Guru, Pandit Shridhar Joo Sharabi, she emerged as a spiritual beacon after three years of deep meditation. Her kutiyas at Verinag, Shivalaya (Srinagar), and later Durganag became centres of devotion, discourse, and peace. She lived 106 years, inspiring thousands through her teachings on truth, simplicity, and devotion, attaining samadhi in 1985 at Verinag.
